Meet the Judges for Guitar Player’s Guitar Superstar 2008 Competition!

Your Host…

Andy Summers
Renowned for his tone, creativity, and innovation as guitarist for the Police, Andy is also a Grammy award winner, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a crafty solo artist, and a fabulous photographer and author. This is his premiere appearance at Guitar Player’s Guitar Superstar.

The Judges!

Joe Satriani
Satch has been a judge for Guitar Superstar since its inception in 2005 at Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame auditorium. (Hooray!) His fierce chops and sensitive phrasing first hit the mainstream with the ultra-smash Surfing with the Alien album in 1987, and he has also developed the guitarfest known as G3, touring with friends and guitar heroes such as Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Paul Gilbert. He is currently touring the globe in support of his latest album, Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock

Steve Vai
A tireless seeker, innovator, and composer, Steve has been blowing the guitar community’s collective mind since the release of is solo album Flex-Able in 1984. It’s common knowledge that Steve took guitar lessons from Joe Satriani, before attending Berklee College of Music, and eventually working with the legendary Frank Zappa (and, recently, paying with Dweezil Zappa on the Zappa Plays Zappa tours). Steve’s latest project will be a collaboration with you—his Naked Tracks release lets guitarists play over his own music-minus-guitar compositions.

Elliot Easton
This is Elliot’s the second year as a GPGS judge, and his pure-pop sense made itself known to last year’s competitors who tried to impress with shred chops alone. As a member of the Cars, Elliot honed his Beatles-meets-country-and-rockabilly-and-every-other-style-under-the-sun approach into one of the most exciting styles on rock radio at the time.

George Lynch
Back in the ’80s, this shredmaster’s feral technique and sweet tone propelled Dokken to international fame. Now, an awe-inspiring solo artist and leader of Lynch Mob, George also runs his own virtual Dojo Guitar Academy, where members can learn tips from the sensei by following lesson plans penned by the master himself.

Brendon Small
Brendon is no stranger to Guitar Player’s Guitar Superstar—he was last year’s host. Now on the judges panel, the co-creator of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse brings his death-metal chops to bear on the competitors—a formidable challenge, as his 2007 release as Dethklok (the animated band in Metalocalypse), The Dethalbum, is currently the highest-charting death-metal album of all time.
